Mothers and Grandmothers…

Mothers and Grandmothers make a significant influence and impression on their children and grandchildren.  Many times, dads are working, so moms have hours with their children to talk, teach, love, feed, clean, play, etc. with them.  As mothers and grandmothers teach them about Jesus, the Bible, godly character, and prayer, they are leaving a genuine faith legacy to be learned and followed.

Many children learn visually and do what their mothers and grandmothers do by mimicking them.  As a child watches them bake chocolate chip cookies, he learns.  When he watches her tell someone about Jesus, he watches, listen, and learns.  When he watches them read their Bible, care about others, or pray, he is learning and mimicking what he learned.  The best way to teach your child to love Jesus as his Savior and to have a genuine faith is by having one also.

Paul told Timothy how blessed he was to have his mother, Eunice and his grandmother, Lois, who had unfeigned or genuine faith.  Paul then said he also saw this genuine faith in Timothy.  He encouraged him to use his gift of God with power, love, and a sound mind, not with fear.

Being a Christian was dangerous, let alone preaching Jesus and His Gospel.  Many died because of their faith; Paul was encouraging Timothy to be fearless, trust God, and be bold.  Fear and faith are opposites; we have one or the other.

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God.”  2 Timothy 1:5-8

Challenge – Timothy was blessed with a godly mother and grandmother who had genuine faith.  He watched and learned from their examples.  The, God gave him a bold mentor, Paul who encouraged him to not be fearful, but to be courageous with obedience and faith to God (doing what God wanted him to do regardless of the outcome or results).

Mothers and grandmothers are jewels in the lives of their children and grandchildren.  What an awesome opportunity to shine Jesus and to teach them about Him, the Bible, and His Gospel.  Let’s not miss our windows of opportunity to have a godly influence on our children and grandchildren.

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”  2 Timothy 1:5

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”  Proverbs 31:28

“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.”  Proverbs 1:8-9

“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.”  Proverbs 6:20-21

“Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons.”  Deuteronomy 4:9

2 Timothy 1:1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

1:2  To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

1:3  I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

1:4  Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

1:5  When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

1:6  Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

1:7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1:8  Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

1:9  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

1:10  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

1:11  Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

1:12  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

1:13  Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

1:14  That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

1:15  This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

1:16  The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

1:17  But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

1:18  The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

I have worn many hats over the years of my life: wife, mother of three sons, Registered Nurse, Teacher, Home school mom, Author, Blogger, Christian who trusts Jesus as her Savior and in all she does, Sunday School Teacher, Encourager, Writer, Secretary, to name a few. I am now over 50 and enjoy pulling from life experiences to encourage others through my writing. I enjoy traveling all over the world and experiencing different cultures. I am quiet but bold; easy going, content, have a heart of peace, love people and push them to their potential and to do their best. Some of my sayings are, "Go above and beyond." "Represent Jesus well." "You are known by your words." My favorite verses are Psalm 46:10 "Be Still and know that I am God." Psalm 56:3 "What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee." Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct they paths." I have so many more. I love reading God's word and visualizing it in my mind. I place myself there in the scene and watch it like a movie in my mind. It comes alive and the historical people who lived thousands of years ago are real to me. I have accomplished my dreams: Wife, Mom, graduated from college, RN, taught, published my books, been a mentor, told others all over the world about my best friend and Savior, Jesus through my blog, My book has been distributed to prisons and military camps all over the world. I have traveled to countries around the world. My future dreams and goals: to be a Nana, to travel in a tiny house, to visit national parks all over the USA, to continue to write to encourage others and tell them about Jesus and His Gospel. to publish a book focused on my husband's lifetime of photography using pictures he has taken along with my writing about them. To continue to exercise five to six days a week for as long as I live to stay healthy. For God to be greatly glorified through my family.

    I read this powerful post a few days ago. If you have read my new book, A Christian Mother’s Creed, I briefly discussed the contagious faith of Timothy’s mother and grandmother. The author of this post did an excellent job describing the challenges Timothy’s mother and grandmother faced as Christians and their influence on Timothy. This is a great read for every Christian mother and grandmother. We are influencers! Enjoy!
